"Occasionally, you see and hear something that blows your mind."
– Saratoga Living
Nu Deco Ensemble is that thing. Audiences at their performances often come away remarking that they have experienced something completely different from "the usual concert experience." Which may be why, even though this is only the ensemble's fourth season in Miami, subscriptions for 2018/19 are already sold out...
Thankfully, this energetic, genre-bending group is coming to Festival Boca! (It's no accident we selected their music for our season announcement video.)
Nu Deco was founded by musical impresario Sam Hyken and the dynamic conductor Jacomo Rafel Bairos. Together, they present music that crosses traditional barriers in terms of style, genre, and instrumentation. Listeners can hear music that was revolutionary in the 1920s paired with music written for computerized sounds, a DJ, or even solo steel drums. Indeed, the orchestra’s singular mix of core classical repertoire, contemporary music and commissions, and collaboratively-arranged suites of popular music, has built a devoted fan base of next-generation music lovers throughout South Florida, with sold-out crowds and critical acclaim.
But that is not all! Nu Deco Ensemble has a deep commitment to supporting the arts, and in particular to commissioning contemporary composers. This year's performances will include works by Nico Muhly, Andy Akiho, William Brittelle, Anna Meredith, and Aaron Parks, and cross-genre guest artists like Grammy award-winning superstar Michelle Williams, singer/pianist Ben Folds, R&B artist BJ The Chicago Kid, organ virtuoso Cory Henry, vocal genius Tei Shi, the inventive and imaginative tUnE-yArDs, and more.
Nu Deco appears at Festival Boca on Saturday, March 9, at 7:30 pm, and if you are willing and ready to have your mind blown, well, it's time to reserve a seat for you and all your friends.
